Every component on your bike wears out eventually. The question is never if — it's when. Get the timing wrong in one direction and you're spending money unnecessarily. Get it wrong in the other and you're risking a mechanical failure mid-ride, accelerating wear on more expensive parts, or both. This guide cuts through the guesswork on every major wear item so you always know exactly where you stand.
Before getting into the specifics, one ground rule: regular cleaning is the single most effective way to extend the life of almost every component on this list. The Chain
The chain is the hardest-working wear item on your bike and the one most riders neglect for longest. It is also the most important to replace on time — because a worn chain accelerates wear on your cassette and chainrings, turning a $15 chain replacement into a $80–$150 drivetrain overhaul.
- Clean and re-lube every 150–200km in dry conditions

Brake Pads
Brake pads are a safety item — which means there's no benefit to squeezing every last millimetre out of them. Worn pads mean longer stopping distances, and on a fast descent or in wet conditions, that is a serious risk. They're also inexpensive. Replace them promptly.

Cassette and Chainrings
The cassette and chainrings wear in tandem with the chain. They are more expensive than a chain to replace, which is why staying on top of chain replacement is so important. By the time these components show obvious wear, they've usually been suffering for a while.

- Remove and degrease chainrings seasonally
- Inspect teeth shape when changing the chain
- Teeth look "shark-finned" or hooked in profile
- Chain skips under load with a new chain fitted
- Cassette has lasted two to three chain replacements
- Visible asymmetric or uneven tooth wear
Cables and Housing
Gear and brake cables stretch, corrode, and fray over time, causing sluggish shifting, unresponsive braking, and — at worst — sudden cable failure. They're inexpensive and quick to replace, yet they're routinely left far too long.
- Re-tension gear cables via barrel adjusters regularly
- Check cable ends for fraying at lever and derailleur
- Drip dry lube into housing entry points annually
- Any visible fraying at anchor points
- Cables that feel rough or sticky through housing
- Housing kinked, cracked, or corroded at ends
- Every 1–2 years as preventative maintenance
A fraying brake cable is a safety emergency, not a "keep an eye on it" situation. A single broken strand near a brake lever means the whole cable is under stress and could fail suddenly. Replace immediately.
Bar Tape and Grips
Bar tape and grips are at the bottom of most maintenance priority lists — which is understandable, since they're not safety-critical in the same way as brakes. But worn grips and tape affect comfort, control, and vibration absorption, and fresh tape genuinely transforms how a road bike feels in the hands.
- Wipe bar tape clean after wet or sweaty rides
- Check grip lock rings are secure (MTB/commuter)
- Reposition tape if it starts unwrapping at ends
- Tape torn, heavily soiled, or no longer cushioning
- Grips cracked, slippery, or worn through
- Every 6–12 months on a regularly ridden bike

Bearings: Bottom Bracket, Headset and Hubs
Bearings are the joints of your bicycle — they allow smooth rotation at the pedals, steering, and wheels. They fail slowly and quietly, which means many riders don't notice degraded bearings until they've been riding on rough, inefficient ones for months.
